Proactive Drupal support takes a healthcare site to near-100% ADA compliance

Specbee took over Altru Health System's Drupal platform after a reactive, ticket-only support contract left security updates behind. The team moved it to a proactive maintenance model and ran continuous accessibility work that brought the large patient-facing site to near-full ADA compliance.

The client

Altru Health System runs a large and constantly growing library of patient-facing healthcare content. A previous vendor worked ticket to ticket with no forward planning, so security updates had fallen behind and the platform had outgrown its architecture. Specbee took over the platform with a security-first maintenance model, then expanded the engagement into UX, search and content work.

The challenge

Security updates had fallen behind, leaving known vulnerabilities unpatched on a healthcare platform. The previous vendor operated reactively with no proactive maintenance or forward planning, and a growing content library had outgrown its architecture with no governance in place. Patients had trouble finding relevant information quickly, and ADA compliance and performance needed sustained attention rather than a one-time pass.

The solution

01Proactive support model

Specbee replaced ticket-driven work with a security-first maintenance model: Drupal core and contributed module updates on schedule, proactive vulnerability monitoring, and a steady cadence of feature work alongside routine maintenance.

02Patient-first redesign

The team ran a full site redesign, reworking navigation and tightening user journeys so patients could find what they came for.

03Content architecture and governance

The underlying data architecture was restructured for scalability, and content governance and publishing workflows were tightened so Altru's team could keep adding content without straining the platform.

04Continuous accessibility and SEO

SEO, performance and ADA work ran as continuous threads throughout the engagement, bringing a large healthcare site to nearly full accessibility compliance.

The results

The platform moved from a reactive security posture to a current, proactive one, and the security backlog was cleared. ADA compliance reached near 100% through continuous accessibility work rather than a single audit. Search was improved with new landing and listing pages, and tighter content governance means new content no longer strains the platform. A support engagement grew into a long-term partnership.
